August 4-10 is National Health Center Week, an annual celebration with the goal of raising awareness about the mission and accomplishments of America’s health centers. According to the National Association of Community Health Centers, in 2018 health centers served over 28 million patients – a number that continues to grow. This included 13 million people in poverty, 8.4 million children, 1.4 million homeless patients, nearly 1 million agricultural workers and more than 350,000 veterans. Health centers have seen increased patient visits as well as an increased demand for affordable primary care.
Four key components define health centers and help them reach America’s most underserved communities:
- Located in Areas of High Need
- Designated by the federal government as medically underserved areas or populations
- Comprehensive Set of Services
- Based on community needs, health centers often offer medical, dental, vision, behavioral, health and enabling services
- Open to Everyone
- Regardless of insurance status or ability to pay, health centers offer sliding-fee scale options to low-income patients
- Patient-Majority Governing Boards
- Fifty-one percent of every health center’s governing board must be made up of patients
It’s important to raise awareness of the needs that exist in our communities and the high costs of failing to provide primary care and preventative health. This year, the National Association of Community Health Centers and the Health Center Advocacy Network invites us to celebrate the ways that health centers are “Rooted in Communities.”
eSolutions kicked off celebrating National Health Center Week by building treat bags for one of our local clients, Swope Health Services. Swope Health has been providing quality health care for those who need it most since 1969 throughout the greater Kansas City area. For the past 50 years, its mission has been to improve the health and wellness of the community by delivering accessible, quality and comprehensive patient care. Today, Swope Health has grown to provide care for more than 40,000 patients in western Missouri and eastern Kansas.
In honor of Health Center Week, we wanted to say thank you to Swope Health for all that they do in our community. What’s better than 30-inch pizzas for their associates? We enjoyed expressing our gratitude and hearing how our solutions help make their lives easier. Following the lunch, members of the eSolutions Federally Qualified Health Center sales team passed out healthy treats and snacks to patients visiting the health center.
To all of you who work at health centers around the country, thanks for all you do! Happy Health Center Week from eSolutions!
